As part of a new collaboration with a Leadership Academy, I suggested a “pre-test” before the program begins. They agreed to the concept, and Iset out to choose one from my collection. It was an AHA moment!
Several self assessments are used in my graduate leadership classes – MBTI, Thomas Kilman Conflict, Change… These all address general personality styles – not specific leadership styles. My students are required to apply the pros and cons of their outcomes to their leadership. But no assessment is actually about their leadership styles!
So I made one up as follows:
* I chose the four major leadership styles being “taught” currently
* I selected ten of the characteristics / behaviors specific to each style
* I created a Likert Rating Scale for each of the characteristics / behaviors
* I added a scoring sheet to determine / prioritize your leadership style
This is not researched, statistically validated, evidence based… or any form of “proper” or “scientific” or “rigorous” study. Yet I’m sure it is more valuable to aspiring leaders than the majority of assessments they are given.
It is attached as a PDF
* for easy download
* to make taking / scoring it simple
* to maintain the Likert Scale formatting
While I have copyrighted it, you may share it and give credit.
In addition to personal use, it would be
* a fun team building exercise
* an insightful tool for 360 review
* an aid for coaching / mentoring leader development
* an added dimension to performance appraisal discussions
ENJOY!
