If you have tried meditation and it hasn’t worked for you, it may be because your meditation technique was in conflict with your personal style (see the blog on Meditation by Personal Style).
If your personal – learning – cognitive style is visual, look for visual meditation techniques. Give yourself permission to try different techniques until you find the one(s) that work for you.
In an uninterrupted space and time, get relaxed and try each of these 2 times a day for 20 minutes. Keep your mind clear by allowing thoughts to float away. After sampling the different techniques, choose the one(s) that work best for you.
Listen to a guided imagery recording (you can also make your own).
Go to A Safe Place:
Choose or create an image of a safe space and focus on it in your mind’s eye.
Stare at a Burning Candle:
Place a lit candle at eye level and stare into it, keeping your mind clear. (Some recommend staring into the tip of the wick). Keep your eyes open until you have to blink. Then close your eyes and see the candle in your mind’s eye.
See it in the middle of your forehead.
Stare at a Religious Picture / Icon / Sacred Object:
Choose an image with meaning for you. Focus on it.
Watch a nature scene:
* a sunrise
* a sunset
* a waterfall
* trees in the wind
See colors:
- choose a color with positive vibes for you: breathe it in through the top of your head and watch it flow through your body and out the soles of your feet
- or see white light pour down around and through you
There are lots of instructions / examples / guided journeys online. Choose what fits you.
